Caroline Abrahams CBE, Charity Director of Age UK said: "While it's good to see the Government considering the options for the future of the energy market the truth is that older people need solutions now. They were promised a consultation on longer term targeted energy support before the end of the summer, and we now know that's very unlikely to happen.
“This winter looks like being at least as difficult as last winter. That means millions of households, particularly those lacking access to the benefits system, are facing an uncertain winter with little to no support. If the Government does not provide urgent financial support to help those most in need, we have no doubt that many older people will face unacceptable levels of hardship again this winter. And worryingly, we know they are often less well placed to withstand it than they were last year, having run down their savings in the meantime.
“The Government needs to follow through on its commitment to consult so we can finally see the introduction of a comprehensive targeted energy social tariff which supports everyone struggling. They must do this as a matter of urgency, and certainly before the colder months set in.”
