Age UK responds to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) guide for consumer protection regarding care homes.
Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK said:
"We hope these new rules will put an end to rip off care home contracts, which have led to some older people and their families paying a lot more than they have been led to expect or was fair. However, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating and we will be taking a keen interest in how well these safeguards are actually implemented, as well as doing what we can to make sure older people know about them.
"Even with these new protections the legal rights of care home residents remain flimsy; we want to see them given proper security of tenure so those who rock the boat by complaining about poor care can't just be thrown out."
"Most care home owners are responsible and caring and will welcome these new rules because they should help the industry weed out unacceptable practices, so everyone should benefit."
