Age UK's comment on Miriam O'Reilly's ageism case against the BBC

Commenting on the outcome of former Countryfile presenter Miriam O'Reilly's age discrimination case against the BBC, Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director at Age UK, said:

'The outcome of this high profile case sends out a powerful signal that even in the youth-worshipping world of show business, age discrimination can be withstood. The idea that wrinkles or grey hair can sound the death knell for the careers of female TV presenters is beyond appalling, especially in a country where over a third of the population is aged 50 and over.

'Simply by appearing to favour younger over older women, television sends out an incredibly negative message suggesting that as women grow older they are no longer valued or trusted. If ageism is to be stamped out, broadcasters must start offering a more honest portrayal of our society to their viewers.

'We are pleased that the BBC has accepted the ruling and look forward to continue working with them to ensure opportunities for people of all ages are embedded in the corporation's employment policies and practices.'
