Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director for Age UK, said:
'The inconsistent quality the CQC has found across health and care in this country is worrying, and it's also important to remember that the numbers of older people receiving social care are falling fast because of Government cuts.
'All in all we think many older people will find this report less than reassuring, and they will be especially concerned that so many of the hospitals they look to when they have a serious health problem have work to do to be truly top-notch.
'At a time when there are huge and growing pressures on the NHS and social care for older people is in sharp decline, the CQC is playing an ever more important role in shining a light on what's really happening to the services older people depend on and in demanding urgent improvement when it's required.'
