What is Joining Forces?

The Joining Forces programme has now ended

Joining Forces was an Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust supported programme in partnership with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. It was delivered by 12 local projects across England by local Age UKs and SSAFA branches. After 3 successful years, the programme has now ended. Many of the pages in this section will still be useful for information and advice. Alternatively, you can look at the relevant sections of the Age UK website.

Who's involved?

Age UK is partnering with SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, to deliver 12 local projects across England, which will involve a partnership between the local Age UK and local SSAFA branch and offering person-centred conversations to older veterans and their family or carer.

These local projects will take place in the following areas:

Born after 1950?

Help for younger veterans

If you were born after 1950, then you can still get support from the Veterans Gateway.

What's involved in Joining Forces?

Nationally, Age UK has launched this new section of the website with tailored information for older veterans and their family or carers, as well as matching isolated older veterans through the Call in Time telephone befriending service.

We'll also be piloting a bespoke app to support person-centred conversations and action planning, as well as sending out a regular email newsletter tailored for older veterans and their family or carers.

Through the project, Age UK hopes to join together the different sources of support available to older veterans, and produce services to reflect any gaps in provision.

We hope to engage over 45,000 older veterans through Joining Forces and to be able to demonstrate improvements in quality of life and wellbeing through an evaluation by the University of Bath.

For more information call the Age UK Advice Line on 0800 678 1602.
We’re open 8am to 7pm, every day of the year.
