Problems with care

It’s vital that you’re comfortable with the care you receive and feel confident it’s right for you. If you're unhappy with the care that you or your loved one is receiving, there are steps you can take to resolve the problem.

I have an issue with...

  • Care homes

    If you have concerns about the cleanliness or quality of your care home, or about the behaviour of staff there, we have information on the steps you can take.
  • NHS services

    You can make a complaint about any aspect of NHS care, treatment or services you receive, including GPs and hospitals, pharmacies or community health services.
  • Local council services

    You can complain to your local council about anything relating to your care, whether you want to challenge a decision regarding your care or you have a complaint about the care you've received.
  • Home care providers

    You have a right to receive a certain standard of care and be treated in a professional and caring way. Our information can help you make a complaint if you aren’t happy with the care you’re receiving at home.

We'll guide you through the process of resolving common problems with care, but if you or someone you know is experiencing neglect or abuse, or at risk of experiencing abuse or neglect, then it's important to take action as soon as possible. 

Contact your local council – they have a safeguarding duty to investigate concerns about abuse or neglect. You can also call the free and confidential Hourglass helpline on 0808 808 8141 – it's open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
