Give an older friend or relative a ring
For lots of us, it's second nature to text or use a message app to keep in touch rather than to make a phone call. But even a 5 minute chat can really brighten someone's day.
Conversation starters
If you're a bit rusty at phone conversation, why not try some of these ideas to get the conversation flowing:
- What are you watching on TV at the moment?
- Did you catch the match?
- What's the weather like with you?
- Let me tell you about my last holiday.
- I just wanted to call to let you know I'm thinking about you.
Try video calling
If the person you'd like to speak to has a smartphone, tablet or a computer with a webcam and microphone, installing some free video calling software (or using apps they already have) can be a lovely way to blend a phone conversation with face to face interaction.
You could try Skype, FaceTime or WhatsApp Video Calling. They're generally simple to use, but it might be worth showing the person how they work first.
Make it a regular thing
If both of you enjoy talking on the phone, why not schedule a time for a regular chat? Pop an alert in your phone or pencil it in on the calendar. A weekly call can be something to look forward to for you both!
