Food2You is an exciting new shopping delivery service that helps older people live healthier, more independent lives. Run by staff from Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, Food2You is flexible and easily accessible for those who use it.
The service helps customers in Lewisham and Southwark. For £5 per delivery, Food2You pick up the customer’s requested groceries from a local supermarket, deliver them and unpack them while having a chat. We joined Caroline Hughes, Project Manager at Food2You, for a day of deliveries in the van, to learn more about the service, find out about the huge contribution volunteers make, and hear from the older people being helped.
“Because of volunteers do such a variety of different roles with Food2You, it means there truly is something for everyone who wants to get involved,” explains Caroline. “To be a Food2You volunteer you need enthusiasm [and] ready to jump in and help us out with delivering such a vital service.”
Jim
“I was losing a lot of my mobility, so my niece phoned up Food2You and the very next week they started delivering,” says Jim, one of Food2You’s customers, who recently lost his wife and has Parkinson’s disease. “It’s been a lifeline for me.”
Jim did 30 years of volunteering himself, so appreciates the help. “What goes around comes around. I did it myself, so it’s nice that people can do it for me.”
David
“It’s a service I recommend to people,” says David, another customer, whose mobility problems mean he spends most of the day in his chair, so is reliant on the service. “It’s very good of them to volunteer and help people.”
