For The Moment - summary of findings from older carers
Launched on Carers Rights Day 2020, the Hidden Carers survey sought the views and input from older unpaid carers across Wales who were not in receipt of formal support.
The survey is part of a national partnership project between Age Cymru and Carers Trust Wales, funded by the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Social Services Third Sector Grant. The project aims to develop person-centred service models to identify and better meet the needs of older carers and carers of people living with dementia.
Receiving more than 300 responses, the survey provides a snapshot into life for older unpaid carers. Carers spoke of their support needs, their ability to access information and services, and their day-to-day experiences in providing care.
The survey found that many carers were just about coping, worried about the future but managing for the moment.
- 51% of respondents said they have not tried to access support either because they don’t know what’s available, are reluctant to seek external help for either themselves of the person they care for, or don’t have the time. Others said that they feel that the care they provide is a natural part of family life
- For the 48% who said they needed support, access to advice and information, help at home, respite and emotional support were among their top requests
- High proportion of respondents wanted information on contingency/emergency planning, accessing benefits, and health/welfare support
- 73% of respondents wanted to receive information and advice online, with 43% via their GP
- 68% of respondents said that they’re coping financially for the moment, but have concerns for the future, while high numbers of survey respondents reported feeling more tired, stressed and suffering from disturbed sleep over the last 12 months.
Following publication of the findings of the survey, we're keen to engage with more carers and support organisations to deepen understanding of many of the issues raised.
