Statement given to the Newyddion website re access to dentistry

Published on 21 July 2023 03:49 PM

Age Cymru’s head of policy Heather Ferguson says “We’re hearing from lots of older people who are struggling to access NHS dental services.  As a result, more older people are seeking private dental care, which is expensive and particularly problematic for older people on relatively low fixed incomes – often wiping out people’s lifelong savings.

“General improvements in NHS dental care have meant that more older people are retaining their own teeth in later life.  However, this means older people need to see dentists more often as older teeth need additional care. Regular check-ups can also help detect mouth cancers and other diseases at an early stage.

“Several older people have told us they are worried about their teeth and gums deteriorating through the lack of treatment.  Clearly, there is a need for more NHS dentists in local communities throughout Wales.”
