Showcasing the importance of human rights for older people at the 2022 Eisteddfod

Deputy Minister for Social Services Julie Morgan MS to visit Age Cymru stand 

Age Cymru will be highlighting the importance of human rights for older people at this year’s National Eisteddfod, being held at Tregaron in Ceredigion. 

With the support of Welsh Government, the Charity has worked with older people to produce a short film featuring older people talking about human rights, called Don’t Get Me Started. The film is intended to help raise awareness of human rights; rights are described in the words of the individual participants so that people can understand how the concepts relate to them and how they may help in their own daily lives. 

Welsh-speaking participant Kay, from the Vale of Glamorgan, said that “more or less people want to keep going with what they are doing without people putting pressure on them saying you have to do this, and you have to do that.” 

To help highlight the charity’s work in this field the Deputy Minister for Social Services Julie Morgan MS will visit the stand on 1 August 2022 where she will be hosted by the chair of Age Cymru Professor John Williams, who is an expert in human rights. Don’t Get Me Started participants Kay and Louisa will also be visiting the stand to meet the Deputy Minister and speak to Eisteddfod attendees.  

Age Cymru’s chief executive, Victoria Lloyd said “We’re delighted to host the Deputy Minister to our stand to help highlight our work on human rights for older people. In many areas of society such as health and social care and in shaping our local communities, not only are the rights of older people often overlooked, but many older people are also unaware of their rights.  

We’re pleased to be working with Welsh Government to raise awareness of rights among older people and to help them understand where and when they can be used. We all have the right to live with dignity, to make our own choices, and to have our views respected.” 

Deputy Minister for Social Services Julie Morgan said: “We want to create a Wales where everyone looks forward to growing older and age is celebrated. Our Vision is for an age friendly Wales that supports people of all ages to live and age well. To reach this vision we need to ensure that the rights of older people, such as dignity and independence are respected. Age Friendly Wales: Our Strategy for an Ageing Society aims to raise awareness, to empower and support people to ensure that their rights are not being compromised. 

“This video which has been produced by Age Cymru is one of a range of tools which will help improve everyone’s understanding of our human rights. I’m looking forward to meeting the project team at Age Cymru along with Kay and Louisa who have kindly shared their experiences. These personal stories will help ensure that every older person is aware of their rights and that no one is overlooked due to age.” 

Age Cymru staff will be distributing information about human rights at their stand, including a new toolkit about human rights and advocacy, and the booklets produced by Social Care Wales in partnership with Welsh Government: Making Rights Work for Older People and Guidance on Understanding Your Care and Support Rights as an Older Person.

Dangos pwysigrwydd hawliau dynol i bobl hŷn yn Eisteddfod 2022  

 Bydd Julie Morgan AS, Dirprwy Weinidog Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol, yn ymweld â stondin Age Cymru 

Bydd Age Cymru yn tynnu sylw at bwysigrwydd hawliau dynol i bobl hŷn yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol eleni, sy'n cael ei chynnal yn Nhregaron yng Ngheredigion.

Gyda chefnogaeth Llywodraeth Cymru, mae'r elusen wedi gweithio gyda phobl hŷn i gynhyrchu ffilm fer yn cynnwys pobl hŷn yn siarad am hawliau dynol, o'r enw Paid â Dechrau. Bwriad y ffilm yw helpu i godi ymwybyddiaeth o hawliau dynol; disgrifir hawliau yng ngeiriau'r cyfranogwyr unigol fel y gall pobl ddeall sut mae'r cysyniadau'n ymwneud â nhw a sut gall yr hawliau helpu yn eu bywydau bob dydd eu hunain.  

Dywedodd y cyfrannwr Kay, sydd yn siaradwraig Cymraeg o Fro Morgannwg, bod "pobl eisiau dal ati gyda beth maen nhw'n ei wneud, mwy neu lai, heb fod pobl eraill yn rhoi pwysau arnyn nhw gan ddweud bod yn rhaid gwneud hyn a’r llall."  

Er mwyn helpu i dynnu sylw at waith yr elusen yn y maes hwn bydd y Dirprwy Weinidog Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol Julie Morgan AS yn ymweld â'r stondin ar 1 Awst 2022.  Yno, bydd cadeirydd Age Cymru Yr Athro John Williams, sy'n arbenigwr mewn hawliau dynol, yn ei chroesawu. Bydd cyfranwyr Paid â Dechrau, Kay a Louisa, hefyd yn ymweld â'r stondin i gwrdd â'r Dirprwy Weinidog a siarad gyda mynychwyr yr Eisteddfod.   

Dywedodd Prif Weithredwr Age Cymru, Victoria Lloyd "Rydym yn falch iawn o groesawu'r Dirprwy Weinidog i'n stondin er mwyn helpu i dynnu sylw at ein gwaith ar hawliau dynol i bobl hŷn. Mewn sawl elfen o gymdeithas fel iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol ac wrth lunio ein cymunedau lleol, nid yn unig y mae hawliau pobl hŷn yn aml yn cael eu hanwybyddu, ond nid yw llawer o bobl hŷn hefyd yn ymwybodol o'u hawliau.   

Rydyn ni'n falch o gael gweithio gyda Llywodraeth Cymru i godi ymwybyddiaeth o hawliau ymhlith pobl hŷn a'u helpu i ddeall ble a phryd y gellir eu defnyddio. Mae gan bob un ohonom yr hawl i fyw gydag urddas, i wneud ein dewisiadau ein hunain, a bod ein barnau yn cael eu parchu."  

Dywedodd Y Dirprwy Weinidog Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol Julie Morgan: "Rydyn ni am greu Cymru lle mae pawb yn edrych ymlaen at dyfu'n hŷn a lle mae oedran yn cael ei ddathlu. Ein Gweledigaeth yw Cymru oed gyfeillgar sy'n cefnogi pobl o bob oed i fyw a mynd yn hŷn yn gyffyrddus. Er mwyn cyrraedd y weledigaeth hon mae angen sicrhau bod hawliau pobl hŷn, fel urddas ac annibyniaeth yn cael eu parchu. Cymru oed gyfeillgar: Nod ein Strategaeth ar gyfer Cymdeithas sy'n Heneiddio yw codi ymwybyddiaeth, a grymuso a chefnogi pobl i sicrhau nad yw eu hawliau'n cael eu peryglu. 

 "Mae'r fideo hwn sydd wedi cael ei gynhyrchu gan Age Cymru yn un o amrywiaeth o ddulliau a fydd yn helpu i wella dealltwriaeth pawb o'n hawliau dynol. Bydd staff Age Cymru yn dosbarthu gwybodaeth am hawliau dynol o’u stondin, gan gynnwys pecyn cymorth newydd am hawliau dynol ac eiriolaeth, a'r llyfrynnau a gynhyrchwyd gan Gofal Cymdeithasol Cymru mewn partneriaeth â Llywodraeth Cymru: Gwneud Hawliau i Weithio ar gyfer Pobl Hŷn a Chanllaw ar Ddeall Eich Hawliau Gofal a Chymorth fel Person Hŷn.
