Comment to BBC Wales News online on the ending of shielding in Wales

Age Cymru’s Chief Executive Victoria Lloyd says: “Many older people are looking forward to coming out of shielding so they can visit more places and see more people. However, according to responses we’ve received to our current survey, we know that many are concerned about re-engaging with their communities. This concern seems to be fuelled by reports of people gathering in large numbers or not following government guidance.

“Others have told us that they have lost their self-confidence and are worried about mixing with others in shopping centres or on public transport.

“To help reassure older people, the Welsh Government should continue to reinforce guidance on how everyone in Wales should behave in terms of social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing while Covid 19 remains a threat.

“We are keen to support actions to help older people to re-engage with their communities safely, and would urge supermarkets to retain designated times for vulnerable people so they can continue shopping during quieter times.

“However, some older people have told us that they will continue to shield beyond the end of official shielding and this particular group must not be forgotten. We need to retain priority food and pharmaceutical delivers, while community health services should, where appropriate, offer face-to-face consultations in the homes of those still shielding.”
