Age Cymru welcomes the new approach to tackle diabetes and improve care from the Welsh Government

Published on 13 June 2023 04:31 PM

With diabetes being a condition that affects many older people in society1 Age Cymru welcomes the announcement of a new approach to tackle diabetes and improve care. The additional investment in prevention will mean that fewer older people will develop type 2 diabetes.

Whilst there have been significant technological advances to support people with diabetes with Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) such as a sensor or a reader, there is a need for careful consideration of how to support digitally excluded older people with the best diabetes care. Whilst having a CGM or a flash monitor is an option for many people, it is less of an option for the digitally excluded individuals who are living with dementia and other memory loss conditions, so it’s vital that is considered in care planning.

There is also a need to ensure that the postcode lottery of quality care is reduced. Research has shown that older people are more likely to be living with co-existing health conditions which require a more holistic and specialist approach to care is needed and with specialisms which aren’t available across the whole of Wales.

There are many ways in which older people can support themselves and carers can support them in managing their diabetes. We advise individuals to speak with their GP whilst managing their condition, but research has shown that making the right dietary choices and keeping active and being aware of the signs of diabetes, will support them in the long term.

Chief Executive, Victoria Lloyd said: “We welcome today’s announcement from the Welsh Government with a new approach to supporting individuals living with diabetes and the additional £1 million per year which is being invested in the pre-diabetes prevention programme as part of the wider investment under the Health Weight Healthy Wales Strategy.

“However, we would urge consideration for older people who may not be as digitally literate or who are living with a memory loss condition. They may not be able to use the technology, such as a flash monitor or a CGM to manage the condition.

“We would also like to see the investment supporting individuals who are living with a pre-existing condition and may require a more holistic and specialist approach and ensure that there is equal access to care.”
